In speaking with my China office last evening, I learned of this new development.  The below message and recent article was forwarded from our ULI Shanghai office.  In July 2007, a similar type action occurred which increased the prices of many commodities from China supplier to the USA customer.  At the same time, we fully expect that there will be many more shipments of the commodities impacted in the below list to be shipped prior to July 15th.  In addition to traditional summer peak season, this further push will certainly impact space from China.  Kindly review the below attachments to see if your products will be affected.   For those that are affected by the tax rebate removal, the vendors will likely be contacting you in the future.

Please note that we were notified that China will be eliminating the Tax Rebate Incentive on certain export products that are considered ¨C ¡°high-pollution, high-energy consumption and resource dependent¡± products in an attempt to restructure the steel industry, reduce emissions and meet the target to conserve energy as part of their 11th Five-Year Plan by 2010.

 

Suggest we report this latest market info to the relevant parties especially those customers that would be hit with this cancellation.  It will certainly trigger many manufacturers in these effected categories as mentioned below to ship out before July/15th and further add to the space pressure we¡¯re faced with.

China to end some export tax rebates starting July

June 22nd, 2010

China will scrap tax rebates to exporters of dozens of commodities while they also face a rise in the yuan.

From July 15, the steel industry will see the removal of 9 per cent tax rebates on hot-rolled steel coil, sections, some narrow cold-rolled coil products and hot-dipped galvanized coil, the ministry said on its website on Tuesday.

The decision to go ahead with the cuts suggests Beijing remains determined to consolidate China¡¯s chaotic steel sector as well as ease trade frictions.

China will also cancel 5 per cent rebates on exports of semi-finished copper products such as rods, bars, profiles and wires, and semi-finished nickel products including plates, sheets, strips, foils and tubes as well as on lead products such as plates, zinc products such as bars, rods, profiles and wire, and tin products such as bars, rods, profiles and wire.
